A good part of the cults make their members pass at some time by enduring, harsh, agressive trials. Those are in fact assaults to measure the persistance and endeavour of the "troops". Some of those trials are in fact also destined to break to a point the person and make her more ameanable to the orders of the leadership. All those groups who do that are in efect satanic even if they would never recognise that and the base members could even be very surprised by such an assumption.
