Would you be surprised to hear that the human race is slowly becoming dumber, and dumber? Despite our advancements over the last tens or even hundreds of years, some ‘experts’ believe that humans are losing cognitive capabilities and becoming more emotionally unstable. One Stanford University researcher and geneticist, Dr. Gerald Crabtree, believes that our intellectual decline as a race has much to do with adverse genetic mutations. But human intelligence is suffering for other reasons as well.

There's chemicals in the water and in our food; it's difficult, extremely difficult to keep 7 billion people well-fed (we don't do that though, do we?). Perhaps this is an invalid excuse for why we have all these terrible pesticides and what not. But it goes so much farther than that.

We're lazier. Machines do everything for us, our food is pre-cooked, we have calculators, auto-tune, blah blah blah. We don't really need to use our brains for anything because everything is a button away. Literally.

There were actually tons of secret societies in Taiwan, the most famous being the Society of Heaven and Earth or Tiandihui.
They began a rebellion in Taiwan in 1787 against the Qing Dynasty.

These societies were created because of Taiwan's very societal makeup up until the late 18th century. There were hardly any women and consequently, families were scarce (your mum is back in the Mainland, your sister, only the rich guy gets a wife, unable to reproduce) and so there were congregations built to replace the family nucleus.
Zhangzhou, Quangzhou and Hakka usually stuck together (as in, Hakka with Hakka) and later these societies were built as an extension of that.
