      The concept of the Übermensch is one of the best known but least understood of Nietzsche's ideas.  The German word is hard to translate.  One common translation, “Superman” has the disadvantage of being associated with a cartoon character.  Walter Kaufman’s coinage, “Overman” avoids this but doesn’t quite convey what is intended.  A literal translation would be something like: Superior and transcendent human being.
